 LECTURE TITLE

“Where Do We Go from Here? – A ‘Fass’ Christianity for a Time of ‘Ginnal’”

In this inaugural lecture, Professor Robert Beckford explores the kind of Christian thought needed for a world grappling with the resurgence of neofascism and emerging, often cryptic, forms of reparations. These realities expose the limits of traditional theology, which too often remains silent in the face of racial injustice and global inequality.

Building on his earlier work — Dread as a lens for Christology and hermeneutics, and Exporcism as a practice of unmasking colonial spirits — Professor Beckford introduces new critical perspectives rooted in Jamaican cultural concepts. Fass embodies audacity — the disruptive courage to speak truth where silence is demanded. Ginnal represents cunning — the wisdom to discern and resist duplicity in political, cultural, and ecclesial life. Together, these ideas open a new theological grammar for our time: one that demands prophetic boldness while navigating the deceptive terrains of race, memory, and power. By placing Caribbean vernacular knowledge in conversation with Christian theology, this lecture reimagines what it means to do theology that is relevant, resistant, and radically transformative.
