Use of Artificial Intelligence tools in academic work

A quick guide (while we are developing fuller guidance in conversation with our university partners)

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools include programmes such as ChatGPT which can be used to create summaries of material online or to generate text in response to questions.
  • Turnitin now includes detection of material possibly created by AI tools, which is flagged for markers to review.
  • The unacknowledged use of material created by AI tools is a form of Academic Malpractice. It is passing off as your own work something that you did not produce.
  • It is fine to use online language and grammar tools such Grammarly to help you identify and correct spelling, punctuation and grammar errors in your work. However, you must not use AI tools to write any portion of your assignment, or to paraphrase text taken from another source.

We are working on creating fuller guidance in conversation with our University partners, that guidance will then be added to the relevant Academic Handbooks and Academic Malpractice policies.
