Dear all, Welcome to the first study skills newsletter! From now on, I’ll be sending one message per term to highlight the resources available to help all current students get the very best out of their learning experience at Queen’s. Contents of this issue: 1. Book now for 2023 live workshops 2. Online resources spotlight 3. Writing mentor If you have any questions, please get in touch, Jen |
1. Book now for live, study skills workshops in 2023. These interactive workshops are always popular, so book early. Sessions can be attended on campus (Wakefield room) or online. Developing critical thinking: Have you ever received assignment feedback suggesting that you develop your critical thinking or highlighting that your work is ‘more descriptive than analytical’? This session will give you a range of practical hints and tips on how to engage with theological topics and questions accurately and analytically. Responding to different types of question and task: Your AQSG representatives have told us that many of you find it difficult to navigate the different types of assignment set and various types of essay question. Here, we’ll take a practical look at the differences between reflective, critical and resource-based assignments. A practical guide to assignment planning: Not a natural planner? Know that you need to plan your assignments more thoroughly but don’t know where to start? Join this workshop where we’ll explore a range of options of how to plan your writing; how to then use your plan to write your assignment and finally, how to improve your first draft towards a completed, final assignment. 2023 dates: Weds 18th January: Developing critical thinking Thurs 26th January: Responding to different types of question and task Thurs 9th February: A practical guide to assignment planning Monday 6th March: Developing critical thinking (repeat) Monday 24th April: Responding to different types of question and task (repeat) Monday 15th May: A practical guide to assignment planning (repeat)

2. Online study skills resources: Don’t forget that Moodle provides a range of study skills support and guidance: For practicalities of assignment submission and accessing online resources: https://queens.commonawards.org/course/view.php?id=1509 Grasping the basics: https://queens.commonawards.org/course/view.php?id=1505 Going further/ specific topics: https://queens.commonawards.org/course/view.php?id=1522 Particularly, I’d like to highlight the section called “Resources for multiple language learners.” Primarily, the resources are designed to support those who study, speak or write in multiple languages but they are also useful to everyone who is still finding their voice in theological writing (so, all of us!). How do we choose what to say and what not to say? How do we express ourselves with integrity while also remaining clear and concise? The resources here will help you think through and practise various approaches to these questions: https://queens.commonawards.org/course/view.php?id=1522§ion=17 |
3. Writing mentor Finally, as deadlines approach, don’t forget that the Queen’s writing mentor is available to support you. See here for more details of what is on offer: https://queens.commonawards.org/course/view.php?id=1263 |
