Registry will be distributing letters from Durham University to all newly registered Common Awards students this week. This is to assist any student wishing to apply to a university close to their home to use the library as part of the SCONUL scheme. Those who have a Campus Card from Durham from last year can use this instead of the letter re the SCONUL scheme to prove they are a university student. In addition all Durham university students (common awards) names have been passed to Durham Library so that when a request goes to confirm that they are a Durham student this will not be a problem. For details of the SCONUL scheme go to: http://www.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access . Note that the right to grant access to a university library rests entirely with that University NOT SCONUL, Durham or us, and many have quite different rules about which requests they will accept under SCONUL. For instance some universities such as Birmingham University only accept SCONUL requests from part time or distance learning students. Some will let you borrow books, some vary between what they let postgraduate or undergraduate students do and many will not let you loan books at all- but access can still be helpful if you if you can plan to work in the library itself. It is certainly worth investigating if you have a university near to you. Fill in the form on the linked page above- in this instance your institution is “Durham University” not Queen’s. Best wishes, the Registry Team.
